Cooking fish in an air fryer has become my new obsession. I feel that the crispy skin and the top crust are unbeatable. It’s like a seafood version of a potato chip. Air fryer cod is my new favorite way to enjoy tender and flaky white fish with a crispy exterior. May I also recommend the Air Fryer Salmon that turns out incredible in the air fryer with the yummiest crust?
With the air fryer, you can achieve a perfectly crisp exterior without the use of excessive oil. Plus, the seasoning options for cod are endless. For this recipe, I chose Old Bay Seasoning. I also tried it with lemon pepper and cajun spice recently, you can customize your air fryer Cod to suit your taste buds.
Ingredients
Please refer to the recipe ingredients and nutrition information at the bottom of this post. Gather the following ingredients for this delightful dish:
Two cod fillets (thawed, if using frozen), a teaspoon of your preferred cooking oil (olive oil or avocado oil works beautifully), a sprinkle of salt and pepper to taste, and a seasoning of choice. I used Old Bay seasoning. I love how its unique blend of herbs and spices adds a delightful zest to the cod, enhancing its natural flavors.
How to Make Cod in the Air Fryer
Prep cod fillets: Brush both sides of the cod fillets with oil or melted butter and season them with your preferred herbs and spices. I used Old Bay seasoning. You can also use garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper for seasoning.

Preheat: Let cod marinate and absorb spices and herbs for 5 minutes. In the meantime preheat the air fryer to 400°F. Then, grease the air fryer basket with oil or cooking spray.
Air fry: Place the cod fillets in the air fryer basket and cook for 8-10 minutes (depending on thickness – see notes below) or until it turns golden brown and crispy. Flip the fillets halfway through the cooking time to ensure it cooks evenly on both sides. Use a meat thermometer to check if the internal temperature of the fish has reached 145°F.

Prepare the dipping sauce: While the cod is cooking, prepare the dipping sauce. You can make tartar sauce by mixing ½ cup mayonnaise, 2 teaspoons finely chopped pickles (or sweet pickle relish), 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, ½ teaspoon of Dijon or yellow mustard, and a pinch of salt.
Or you can also make a healthy Avocado Cilantro Dipping sauce by mixing avocado, lime juice, garlic, and salt in a blender. Blend it until it becomes smooth and creamy.
Serve cod hot with the dipping sauce on the side. May I recommend this Spicy Chipotle Mayo that tastes divine with white fish? Serve cod with a side salad, roasted vegetables, or Air Fryer French fries.
Variations
While this Air Fryer Cod recipe is delicious as is, you can always tailor it to your taste preferences. Here are a few suggestions to change up the recipe:
Roll it in Panko: You can coat the fish with breadcrumbs or panko for an extra crispy texture. I love to coat my Air Fryer Breaded Cod with panko breadcrumbs. They add an unparalleled crunch and also give the fish a flavor boost. Panko breadcrumbs, which are lighter and crispier than traditional breadcrumbs, are the perfect addition to any seafood dish for a game-changing taste and texture.
Experiment with different seasonings: Try Cajun seasoning, lemon pepper, garlic powder, or smoked paprika for a unique flavor profile. I love Jo-Ann’s easy Cod video recipe with Lemon-pepper seasoning.
Add citrus: Squeeze some lemon or lime juice over the cod before air frying for a tangy kick.
Infuse with herbs: Sprinkle fresh or dried herbs like parsley, dill, or thyme on top of the cod for an added aromatic touch.
Serve with dipping sauces: Accompany your Air Fryer Cod with tartar sauce, aioli, or a zesty homemade salsa for an extra burst of flavor.
You can also marinate the fish in lemon juice, olive oil, and herbs for a flavorful dish.
Cod can easily be swapped for other types of fish such as tilapia, sea bass, or haddock.

Leftovers
Once cooled, place the cod fillets in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days. To reheat, pop them back in the air fryer for a few minutes at 350F until warmed through. However, I recommend enjoying this dish immediately after cooking for the best taste and texture.
Tips for Best Air Fryer Cod Recipe:
Pay attention to these expert suggestions to ensure your cod fillets emerge from the air fryer with optimal taste and texture.
- If cooking frozen cod in the air fryer, please make sure it is thawed. First, avoid using hot water. Sure, it may seem like a quick fix, but trust me, we’re going to air fry cod, not start the cooking process in hot water. Instead, pop the frozen cod in the fridge overnight or place it in a sealed bag and submerge it in cold water for a quicker thaw.
- Pat the cod fillets dry with a paper towel before seasoning. This helps to remove excess moisture, allowing for better browning.
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) before placing the cod inside. This ensures even cooking and a crispy exterior.
- Flip the cod halfway through the cooking time to promote even browning on both sides.
- Make sure your cod fillets are the same thickness. This ensures even cooking and not over-drying the thinner cod fillets.
- Use a food thermometer to check the internal temperature of the cod. It should reach 145°F (63°C) for safe consumption.
- Serve the Air Fryer Cod immediately to enjoy its optimal taste and texture.

Looks so appetising
Thank you! It’s my new favorite way to make cod!!
I agree it looks appetizing, but the cod literally fell apart when I tried flipping it.
That is always a challenge with tender fish. I had much better luck once I bought a fish spatula designed to get under the fish. It is long and very flexible.
I also have learned it’s super important to oil the pan or backer with a basting brush.

My new favorite way to make fish! So flakey! My only issue was way too salty!! I will omit the salt next time, don’t need it.
I agree with you! Oversalted fish is not pleasant to the taste.
I love cod but have never cooked it. I can’t wait to try your recipe in my Emerald Dutch Door Air Fryer. Thanks for posting this recipe.
You are welcome. I hope you try soon. I heard the good things about your air fryer. Good luck
Absolutely delicious! So easy to prep and quick to the plate. The fish flaked easily after 8 minutes. Second batch was thinner and was done in 4 minutes (the fryer was really preheated). So moist and flaky. Thank you. Didn’t have to turn the oven on!
Yay! Thank you for your feedback. I’m glad it cooked perfectly for you. this is one of my fav fish to cook in the air fryer.
I cooked this and everybody in the house loved it. I haven’t eaten fish in over 20 years because I got a bone in fillet fish, and it was awful I thought I was going to die it was hard to get it up. This recipe was excellent.
I’m sorry to hear about your awful fish experience. I’m glad you liked this recipe. It’s one of my faves too. I hope 20 years later you can start enjoying fish.
Thank you, for this recipe. I fixed cod recently before having this recipe. Big Mistake. But no longer. Dinner tonight was moist, plump, and tasty. Its my go to from this point on….
HI Valerie. Thank you for your feedback. I’m glad you liked this recipe. It’s my got to for cod fish too
Super way to cook Cod, Flaky, Tasty, No need to turn it over .Creamed mashed potato, Grilled Courgettes in a Garlic butter with Parmesan Cheese over. Delicious.
I love this recipe. I’ll go back to this recipe and try some of the suggestions the author suggested. I had avocado ranch dressing for my dipping sauce and it was delicious
I actually put the Old Bay Seasoning on first by mistake
Let it sit for about 20 minutes. Sprayed avocado oil both sides of filets and liberally in basket.
Cooked in preheated air fryer for 9 minutes flipping 1/2 way. Perfect. Served with lemon wedges, tartar sauce and coleslaw.
I think if you have trouble flipping, it’s already pretty well done. These were thin filets from the tail end and the fryer gave them a good sear whoch helped in ease of flipping and we found them steaming and tender inside.
Prenote: My first use of my first Air Fryer.
I was too well done with 10 minutes per side. I’ll go 7 next time.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Fred! It’s awesome that you’re diving into the world of air frying—welcome aboard! Cooking times can definitely vary depending on the thickness of the cod and the specific air fryer model. Adjusting to 5-7 minutes per side sounds like a great plan! You might also try checking the internal temperature next time (145°F is perfect for fish) to get it just right. Happy air frying, and let us know how it turns out!
Further, I’ll mix up:
1 Tbl Oil
dash salt and pepper very light
1 tsp Old Bay
Mix, swipe cod in mix, marinate covered 5mins to 1hr. Then air fry.
I just made this…this was amazing!!!
I’m so glad you loved it! Thanks for trying the recipe and sharing your feedback. Hope you make it again soon! 😊🍽️
Im always confused but normally guess. when you say cook in Airfryer, does that mean to cook on airfry or bake
Great question! When I say “cook in the air fryer,” I mean using the air fry setting. It gives the best crispy texture, while the bake setting works more like a regular oven. Hope that helps!
