Mushrooms have always been a favorite food of mine, Once I discovered the magic of cooking mushrooms in an air fryer, my obsession truly began. I cook them for 10-12 minutes, shaking halfway and I adore how they turn out perfectly soft, with crispy charred edges and full of flavor. I use them as a topping for a burger or steak. Or I add them to my morning eggs or Air Fryer Omelet. Not to mention, using an air fryer cuts down on the amount of oil needed for cooking, making it a healthier option. I can’t imagine going back to any other method.

My favorite thing about this air fryer sauteed mushrooms recipe is how much flavor you get from them; with only a few ingredients. Air-fried mushrooms need much less oil than pan-sauteed mushrooms. In the air fryer, they caramelize in their natural juices and marinade, so you only need a light coating of oil.

Did you know that you can cook Mushrooms along with Onions in the Air Fryer or Mushrooms with Peppers for a tasty combination? Not only is it a quick and easy way to cook up a tasty meal, but it’s also a healthy option since you’re using literally a tablespoon of oil. The air fryer cooks the ingredients evenly and adds a satisfying crispness to the mushrooms and veggies.

Why this Air Fryer Mushroom Recipe Works

A Healthier Cooking Method. Air fryers are known for their ability to cook food with little to no oil, making them a healthier alternative to traditional frying methods. This is especially beneficial for mushrooms, which can absorb a lot of oil when cooked on the stove. By using an air fryer, you can enjoy crispy, flavorful mushrooms without the added calories and fat.

Convenience and Speed. One of the biggest advantages of using an air fryer is its speed. Sauteeing or grilling mushrooms can be time-consuming, requiring constant attention to avoid overcooking or burning. With an air fryer, you can achieve perfectly cooked mushrooms in a fraction of the time, allowing you to focus on your other meals or your family.

Better Flavor and Texture. Air fryers use hot air circulation to cook food, resulting in a crispy exterior and a tender inside. This cooking method enhances the natural flavors of mushrooms, giving them a rich, savory taste that you can’t get from sauteed or grilled mushrooms.

How to Cook Mushrooms in an Air Fryer

Here I highlight the best ingredients for my air fryer mushrooms recipe and choices. Please refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this post for precise quantities and nutrition information.

Ingredients

Mushrooms. This recipe This recipe works great with many varieties of mushrooms. White button mushrooms, Portobello mushrooms, Shiitake, or Oyster mushrooms. I chose Portobello mushrooms for my recipe. They are perfect for air frying and can be used in a variety of dishes, from burgers to stuffed mushrooms.

Oil. I use a tablespoon of Olive oil or Avocado oil. It helps mushroom slices achieve a crispy texture in the air fryer. Plus, oil helps to evenly distribute the seasoning and prevents the mushrooms from sticking to the air fryer basket.

Seasoning. I used a blend of salt, pepper, garlic, and herbs. I also added a squirt of soy sauce. You can season them with any herbs and spices to suit your taste.  I love adding garlic powder, paprika, thyme, and rosemary.

How to Cook Mushrooms in the Air Fryer

Preheat your air fryer. While some air fryer models claim that preheating is unnecessary, I still preheat my air fryer for a few minutes before adding the mushrooms or any other of my Air Fryer Recipes. This ensures that the mushrooms cook evenly and achieve a golden crispy texture.

Clean and Slice. Rinse mushrooms under cool running water. Use a damp paper towel to wipe off any dirt and debris. Avoid soaking them in water! Because mushrooms can absorb moisture, which can affect their texture when cooked. Once cleaned, slice the mushrooms evenly to ensure they cook uniformly in the air fryer. I slice them in ¼ inch-thick slices. If mushrooms are smaller, you can cut them in half.

Air fry at 375°F for 10-12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through to ensure even cooking. Serve as a side dish or a topping for salads and pizzas.

Garlic Parmesan Mushrooms. Mix the mushrooms with olive oil, 2 cloves of minced garlic, a tablespoon of grated parmesan cheese, and a sprinkle of parsley. Air fry at 375°F for 10-12 minutes, and enjoy this flavorful and cheesy delight.

Spicy Cajun Mushrooms. When I crave bold flavors, I love making spicy Cajun mushrooms. Toss the mushrooms with olive oil, Cajun seasoning, and a dash of hot sauce. Air fry at 375°F for 10-12 minutes, and savor the spicy kick with each bite.

Air Fryer Roasted Mushrooms

Serve

Air fryer mushrooms make an excellent accompaniment to various meat dishes. Pair them with Air fryer Pesto Chicken or Air-fried Steak. I especially love pairing them with my crispy Air Fryer Pork Chops. The mushrooms’ savory flavor complements the richness of the meat and creates a harmonious balance.

For vegetarian meals, serve air fryer mushrooms with roasted vegetables, quinoa, or pasta. May I recommend this satisfying and enjoyable Air fryer Mushrooms and Broccoli?

Air-fried mushrooms make for great snacks and appetizers. Serve them with Chipotle Mayo Dipping Sauce or Homemade Chick-fil-A Sauce for a tasty treat that is great for parties or gatherings with family and friends.

Leftovers

Store air-fried mushrooms in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

In the freezer. Store cooked mushrooms in the freezer in the zip-lock bag for up to 3 months. You can add them to your soups and stews straight from frozen.

To reheat, place mushrooms in the preheated air fryer at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 2-4 minutes, or until heated through.

Make a mouth-watering Air Fryer Mushroom Melt. Spread mayo or butter on both sides of your bread and layer your cheesy mushrooms onto your bread. Finally, pop your Mushroom Melt into the Air Fryer, and in 5 minutes, you’ll have a satisfying, gooey Mushroom grilled cheese that’s perfect for a quick lunch or dinner.

Do Mushrooms Shrink?

YES! Mushrooms lose their natural moisture when cooked (no matter what cooking method you choose), and this makes them appear smaller in size and wrinkly. However, once mushrooms shrunk in the air fryer, their flavor becomes more concentrated and their texture becomes crispy and more delicious.

Before & After: Mushrooms & Onions were cooked in Ninja XL Air Fryer. You may clearly see how mushrooms have shrunk to at least half of their size.

Kitchen Tip: Do not freeze FRESH mushrooms. While it might tempting to throw them in the freezer, especially when you snagged a good 2-pound organic mushrooms pack at a local wholesale club, I would not recommend freezing raw mushrooms. The reason for this is Freezing causes moisture in the mushrooms to expand and create ice crystals which, upon thawing, can turn the mushrooms into a slimy, soggy, and mushy mess. Trust me, you don’t want to make the same mistake I did.

  • Place your mushroom slices in a mixing bowl and coat them with a mixture of oil and soy sauce. Let them sit for five minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate the mushrooms, but be careful not to leave them in the mixture for too long. Although mushrooms absorb flavors well, too much soy sauce can result in an overly salty taste that's just not my cup of tea.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 375° F (190°C) for 2-3 minutes.
Air fry at 375°F for 10-12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through to ensure even cooking.
  • Sprinkle on some Parmesan cheese if desired. Parmesan cheese adds a rich, savory taste to these mushrooms.
