I have always been a big fan of avocado in any shape or form, and these crispy air fryer avocado cakes have quickly become my new favorite way to enjoy this delicious ingredient. What I love most about them is how simple they are to make – with just three ingredients including a ripe avocado, a large egg, and a cup of shredded cheese, they come together in just minutes. I love how they get perfectly crispy on the outside, while soft and creamy on the inside. And my favorite part? I can even use these fritters as a substitute for bread buns, creating a unique and healthy twist on some of my favorite sandwich recipes!

Plus it’s healthy too. This 3-ingredient avocado bread is a dream come true if you’re looking for an easy, nutritious, and tasty bread option. It is rich in healthy fats and protein and it’s naturally gluten-free and low-carb.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Avocado. Use a ripe avocado. It adds creaminess and richness to the fritters
  • Egg, to help bind the mixture together
  • A cup of shredded cheese of your choice. I tried this recipe with Mozzarella and Cheddar. Personally, I found the Mozzarella cheese to be the winner, producing a gooey and mouth-watering cheese pull that is simply irresistible.
  • 1 teaspoon of your favorite seasoning. I don’t count this as an ingredient. Here I used a light sprinkle of Everything Bagel Seasoning on each patty. If you don’t have this seasoning on hand – a small pinch of salt, pepper, garlic powder, or paprika works well. Please feel free to experiment with different spices, herbs, and blends to customize the flavor profile to your taste preferences.

How to Make Avocado Fritters

Prepare the Avocado. Cut the ripe avocado in half and remove the pit. Scoop out the flesh into a bowl and mash it until smooth. This will be the base of your fritters, so make sure there are no large chunks in the mix.

Mix in the Cheese, Egg, and Seasoning.  Add the shredded cheese and your chosen seasoning to the mashed avocado. Mix well to ensure that the cheese and seasoning are evenly distributed throughout the avocado mixture. In a separate bowl, beat the egg. Add the beaten egg to the avocado mixture and stir until everything is well combined. Until it looks creamy and mushy like this.

Form the Fritters. Divide the mixture into 8 even parts. Using a spoon, scoop up one part of the mixture and place it on the parchment-lined basket (or tray) of your air fryer. Shape it into a patty that’s about 3-4 inches in diameter. For maximum crunch, use a spoon or fork to press the patty as thin as possible, to about ¼ inch thickness.

One great tip for making perfect avocado fritters in your air fryer is to line the basket with parchment paper. The fritters are heavy enough to hold the paper in place and it makes for an easy clean-up afterwards. However, if you rather skip the parchment paper, that’s okay too! Keep the avocado mixture in the freezer for 20 minutes to let it solidify. Once you’re ready to cook, lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil to ensure your fritters don’t stick.

Preheat the Air Fryer. Preheat your air fryer to 390°F (195°C) for 3 minutes. Cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through using a thin silicone spatula, until the fritters are golden brown and crispy on both sides and edges.

Bake in the oven. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a tablespoon, scoop the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart. Flatten each fritter slightly with a fork. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

In a frying pan. You’ll need a thin layer of oil (1 tablespoon) so that they crisp up and cook evenly. Place the fritters in the medium hot frying pan and let them cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until they’re golden and crispy.

Transform Avocado Fritters into Avocado Bread

My favorite part about these avocado fritters is that I can transform them into avocado bread. No need to change the recipe. Just make the avocado fritters as per the recipe above and use them as a low-carb avocado bread bun that goes well with burgers and sandwiches. The convenience of having a healthier alternative to traditional bread is one of the many reasons why I’m hooked on this creation.

Variations

To give your avocado bread a flavor boost, feel free to add herbs and spices. A pinch of garlic powder, a teaspoon of chopped cilantro, or even a touch of chili flakes can elevate the taste.

Seeds and Nuts: For added crunch and nutritional benefits, mix in seeds like chia or flax, or sprinkle chopped nuts such as walnuts or almonds on top before baking.

Make it sweet: If you prefer a sweeter bread, try adding a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup to the mixture. You can also include some dried fruits like raisins or cranberries for added texture.

Serving Suggestions

Once cooked, remove the fritters from the air fryer and allow them to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them as they are, or with your favorite dipping sauce. I love them with the Spicy Chipotle Mayo or Homemade Chick-fil-A sauce.

Top your fritters with extras like sour cream, salsa, or sprinkle Everything Bagel seasoning.

How to Store

Store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. Unlike fresh avocados, which can turn brown and mushy within hours of being opened, these avocado fritters stay fresh and delicious for up to 3 days, making them the ultimate grab-and-go treat. Reheat them in the air fryer at 375°F for 3 to 5 minutes, flipping them halfway through.
