Air-fried Sweet potatoes are a household favorite in my family. We love how they turn out crispy, caramelized skin while preserving the tender, sweet flesh. It’s healthier than deep frying, faster than baking in the oven, and perfect for busy weeknight dinners. May I also recommend Air Fryer Baked Sweet Potato, and Sweet Potato Chips that turn out incredible in the air fryer with the yummiest crust and charr.

With the air fryer, you can achieve a perfectly crisp exterior without the use of excessive oil. Whether you’re making sweet potato fries, cubes, or wedges, the seasoning options for sweet potatoes are endless. For this recipe, I chose garlic powder, paprika, and rosemary. I also tried it with cinnamon and brown sugar, you can customize your air fryer sweet potatoes to suit your taste buds. If you’re not a fan of sweet potatoes, may I recommend Air Fryer Potatoes that are roasted to crispy perfection with a drizzle of olive oil and some herbs or Air Fryer Roasted Pumpkin that has a melt-in-your-mouth texture that’s hard to resist?

Ingredients

sweet potatoes for roasting ingredients
  • 2 Medium sweet potatoes. Choose firm, smooth sweet potatoes without any cracks or soft spots.
  • 1 Medium Onion. Here’s a little secret – adding diced onions can take your sweet potato game to a whole new level. As the sweet potatoes cook in the air fryer, the onions become caramelized and add extra crunch and a depth of flavor. Sweet, yellow, or red onion works great for this recipe.
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil (or spray oil). While air fryers require less oil than traditional frying methods, a small amount of oil is still necessary to achieve a crispy texture.
  • 1 Teaspoon seasoning. I use a mix of Salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika, but feel free to use your favorite spices and herbs. I added half a teaspoon of dried rosemary.

How to Make Sweet Potatoes in Air Fryer

Give your sweet potato a good scrub under running water to remove any dirt. You can choose to peel them or leave the skins on for added fiber and texture.

Cut your sweet potatoes into uniform pieces. I cut them into 1-inch cubes. Whether you prefer wedges, cubes, or fries, consistency in size ensures even cooking and prevents some pieces from burning while others remain undercooked.

Peel and slice onions into half circles or thin wedges, depending on your preference.

Toss the sweet potatoes and onions with oil and seasoning until they are well-coated.

Preheat your air fryer at 375°F for 3 minutes before adding your sweet potatoes.

Spread the pieces out in a single layer, allowing hot air to circulate evenly around each piece.

Cook for 12-16 minutes at 375°F, depending on the size. Shake the basket halfway through cooking to promote even browning.

Check for doneness: Around the 12-minute mark, check the vegetables by poking them with a knife or fork. They should be golden brown and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. If needed, cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Seasoning Variations

  • Cinnamon Sugar Sweet Potato Wedges: For a sweet twist, coat sweet potato wedges with a mixture of ½ teaspoon of cinnamon and ½ teaspoon of brown sugar before air frying. The result is a delightful treat that’s perfect for dessert or a sweet side.
  • Spicy Sweet Potato Cubes: Toss sweet potato cubes with olive oil, chili powder, and garlic powder, and air fry until crispy. These make a great addition to salads, bowls, or as a flavorful side dish.
  • Add herbs: Add fresh or dried herbs like rosemary, thyme, or sage to your seasoning mix. These herbs infuse the vegetables with aromatic flavors that elevate the dish to a gourmet level.
  • Cheesy Sweet Potatoes: Toss the roasted sweet potatoes with grated Parmesan cheese before serving.

Pair Air-fried Sweet Potatoes with Other Dishes

Sweet potatoes pair well with many main dishes, from Grilled Chicken and Air-fried Steak to vegetarian options like black bean burgers and tofu. Their natural sweetness complements both savory and spicy flavors.

Serve sweet potatoes and onions alongside a Fresh Cucumber Radish Salad or Air-fried Roasted Vegetables for a complete dinner.

Add air-fried sweet potatoes to salads and grain bowls for an extra boost of flavor and texture. They work well with greens like spinach and kale, as well as grains like quinoa and brown rice.

Use the sweet potatoes and onions as a filling for tacos. Add black beans, corn, and a dollop of sour cream for a delicious vegetarian lunch.

Storage and Reheating Tips

  • Place the cooled vegetables in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • To reheat, place the vegetables back in the air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 5-7 minutes. They’ll regain their crispy texture without drying out.
  • For longer storage, you can freeze the air-fried vegetables. Spread them out on a baking sheet to freeze individually before transferring them to a freezer bag. They can be stored for up to 3 months.

Beyond Sweet Potatoes Explore Other Air-Fried Vegetables

The air fryer isn’t just for sweet potatoes. Try using it to cook other vegetables like Carrots, Zucchini, and Brussels sprouts. The possibilities are endless, and each vegetable offers its unique flavor and texture. Air-frying vegetables help retain their nutrients while creating a crispy texture that’s hard to resist.
