Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing Recipe
If you’re a chicken wings lover, like me, you came to the right place. There’s nothing quite like homemade blue cheese dip to take your crispy Buffalo wings to the next level.
But don’t just stop there, this dressing can be used for veggies, paired with other spicy sides like air fryer jalapeno poppers, or can be the perfect dressing to use for delicious steak bites!
I love how the rich creamy texture of the dressing pairs perfectly with the succulent crispy chicken wings, while the tangy taste of blue cheese marries these two dishes together in a fantastically flavorful marriage. Truly, they’d be incomplete without each other and are sure to satisfy any craving. Try dipping Garlic Parmesan wings, Air-fryer Korean Wings, and BBQ Drumsticks into your freshly prepared homemade Blue cheese sauce.
Combine some blue cheese crumbles, mayonnaise, sour cream, and a few other simple ingredients. Give it a whisk with the fork until it’s smooth, and then refrigerate for at least 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Serve it up with your favorite wings, and enjoy the deliciousness.
Ingredients
- 4 ounces of bleu cheese crumbles, divided. I use Roquefort. I feel that it’s creamier with a smooth flavor. It is made from sheep’s milk.
- 3 Tablespoons sour cream.
- 3 Tablespoons Mayonnaise.
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream. Can substitute for buttermilk or half and half.
- 1 teaspoon olive oil.
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce.
- 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar.
- ¼ teaspoon salt.
- ¼ teaspoon pepper.
- 1 garlic clove, finely minced. Or substitute for 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder.
- A squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
Directions
In a medium bowl, add half of the bleu cheese and heavy cream, using a fork mash them up until the mixture looks like a large curd cottage cheese.
Add the sour cream, mayo, oil, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, salt, and pepper, to the bleu cheese and stir to combine.
Add in the remaining bleu cheese crumbles on top and stir in lightly.
Refrigerate for at least 20 minutes, or best for 1 hour.
Enjoy the best rich and creamy homemade blue cheese dressing and dip.
Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing vs. Store Bought
Flavor Explosion vs. Mild Taste. Homemade dressing is packed with bold blue cheese flavor, lets you control the strength of the cheese and the balance of ingredients. Store-Bought tends to be milder and often has artificial flavors to prolong shelf life, so it may lack the punch of real blue cheese.
Fresh Ingredients vs. Preservatives. Homemade: Made with fresh blue cheese, real dairy, and simple seasonings—no need for preservatives, stabilizers, or artificial thickeners. Store-Bought: To keep it shelf-stable, many store-bought versions contain additives and preservatives, which can alter both taste and texture. o use full-fat or light ingredients and limit sugar or sodium if needed. Store-Bought: Watch out for hidden sugars, sodium, and fats used to enhance flavor and texture in processed dressings.
Perfect Texture vs. Often Too Thick or Too Thin. With homemade you can control the thickness, adding more buttermilk for a dressing or keeping it thick for a dip, allowing you to craft the perfect consistency. Store-Bought is often hit-or-miss with texture, some are overly thick and gloopy, while others are watery and thin, lacking the creamy richness of homemade.
Cost-Effective vs. Potentially Pricey. High-quality blue cheese may cost more initially, but a batch of homemade dressing can stretch a long way and usually costs less per serving. A small container of premium blue cheese dressing can be pricey and doesn’t always deliver on flavor or quality.
Storing tips
First of all, make sure that the dip is stored in an airtight container. If there is too much air exposure, the dip may start to spoil.
Secondly, refrigerate the dip as soon as possible after making it. Homemade one will last in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Pro Tip: label the dip with the date that it was made. This will help you to keep track of how long it has been in the fridge and ensure that you don’t eat it after it has expired.
Lastly, my favorite tip. The Blue Cheese crumbles can be stored in the freezer. Yay! So you can keep the actual crumbled blue cheese freezer fresh and use a portion of it as needed. No defrosting is required. Because there are crumbles, they easily get separated from the rest of the crumbled mass.
Ways to Use Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing
- Blue Cheese Salad. Drizzle it over a crisp wedge salad with bacon, tomatoes, and chives, or mix it into any hearty salad for an instant flavor boost.
- Buffalo Wings Dip. Serve it on the side of spicy Buffalo wings for a cool, creamy contrast that balances the heat perfectly.
- Burger Topper. Spread it on burgers to add a rich, tangy layer that pairs perfectly with Air-fried patties and Caramelized Onions.
- Veggie Dip. Use it as a dip for a platter of crunchy veggies like carrots, celery, bell peppers, and broccoli for a fresh savory snack.
- Stuffed Potato Filling. Add a dollop to Air fryer Baked Potatoes or mashed into Twice-Baked Potatoes for a creamy, blue cheese twist.
- Blue Cheese Pasta. Mix into cold pasta salads with bacon, tomatoes, and greens, creating a rich, tangy pasta salad that stands out.
- Egg Salad or Deviled Eggs Add-In. Stir a bit into egg salad or deviled eggs to add a new layer of flavor.

- Greek Yogurt Swap. Use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for a lighter, tangier version. Adds protein and keeps it creamy without the extra calories.
- Avocado Blue Cheese. Blend in half an avocado for extra creaminess and a slight earthy taste. Great for a thicker dip-style dressing.
- Herbed Blue Cheese Dressing. Add fresh herbs like dill, chives, or parsley for a bright, herby twist that complements the rich blue cheese flavor.
- Honey Blue Cheese. Add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup to bring out the creamy, sweet-savory notes—a great way to soften the boldness of blue cheese.
- Dairy-Free Option. Use coconut or cashew yogurt in place of sour cream, and almond or oat milk instead of buttermilk. This keeps it creamy and tangy for dairy-free diets.
- Spicy Blue Cheese Dressing. Stir in a bit of hot sauce, cayenne, or sriracha for a spicy kick. Perfect for pairing with wings or adding some heat to salads.
- Mustard-Infused Blue Cheese. Add a teaspoon of Dijon or Whole Grain Mustard. Especially good for sandwiches or burger toppings.
The best homemade blue cheese dip I ever had in my life. Thank you for the recipe
I got my recipe from a wing house that sold theirs but the container for take home orders. Try this and if you like it share the recipe all you want to because it is just that easy and good. I had to figure out how to reduce their recipe from a gallon down to 4 cup version.
1/2 t. garlic salt, 1/2 t. white pepper and a shake or 2 of black pepper.
1/2 t. Worcestershire sauce. Mix this with the spices to create a paste. Then add 1/4 cup of milk. Stir to dissolve spices. then add 2 T. of white vinegar and give it a quick stir. Whisk in 2 c. of Hellman’s Mayo. Add to this a 4oz. tub of Blue Cheese crumbles. Let it sit overnight or at least a few hours so the flavors will blend into the best dip/ salad dressing you will ever eat.
Thank you for the recipe! Sounds DELISH!
