To make this flavorful Chipotle sauce at home, you will need just a few key ingredients: canned Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, mayonnaise, sour cream, garlic, lime juice, a touch of honey, and salt. Simply combine all the ingredients in a blender or food processor (I used Hamilton Beach) and blend until smooth. The result is a creamy and zesty sauce or dip that is pale peachy-pink in color and pairs perfectly with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or as a dipping sauce for Chicken Nuggets and other finger foods.

What are Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce?

Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce are Chipotles are jalapeños that have been dried and smoked. They create a unique flavor that’s both sweet and earthy. Adobo, on the other hand, is a sauce made of ground chilies, herbs, vinegar, and other seasonings that come together to create a tangy, slightly sweet, and mildly spicy concoction. Together, chipotle and adobo create a powerful combination that adds depth and complexity to soups, sauces, marinades, and more.

One of the great things I love about making my own chipotle mayo sauce is that I can customize it to suit my taste preferences. If you like it extra spicy, add an extra chipotle pepper or some crushed red pepper flakes. For a creamier texture, increase the amount of mayonnaise or add some Greek yogurt. Feel free to experiment with different flavor combinations by adding herbs like cilantro or spices like cumin and paprika.

Is Chipotle Sauce Healthy?

Not only is homemade chipotle sauce delicious, but it is also healthier than store-bought versions that are often loaded with preservatives and additives. By making your own sauce from scratch, you can control the quality of ingredients used and avoid unnecessary chemicals. Plus, you can adjust the level of spiciness and saltiness to suit your dietary needs. Say goodbye to store-bought sauces full of artificial flavors and sodium – with this homemade version, you know exactly what goes into your food.

Ways to Use Chipotle Sauce

This versatile sauce can add a kick of heat and depth of flavor to virtually any dish you can think of. Try slathering it on a Juicy Air-fried Hamburger or dip Crispy Onion Rings into it for a spicy twist. Chipotle sauce also pairs perfectly with grilled meats like chicken, Air Fryer Steak Bites, Salmon, or Cod fish adding a smoky sweetness that perfectly complements savory flavors. For a vegetarian option, drizzle it over roasted vegetables or stir it into soups for an unexpected burst of flavor.

How Long Does Chipotle Sauce Last

Homemade chipotle sauce typically lasts for up to 2 weeks when stored in the refrigerator. The acidity from the vinegar and lemon juice helps preserve the sauce, but it will eventually start to lose its flavor and potency over time. Keep the sauce sealed tightly in a glass jar or plastic container to prevent air exposure, which can lead to spoilage. If you notice any signs of mold, off odors, or discoloration in your homemade chipotle sauce, it’s best to discard it.

To extend the shelf life of your homemade chipotle sauce, you can freeze it in an airtight container or ice cube trays. This way, you can thaw out small portions as needed. However, it may change the texture after thawing, therefore I recommend devouring it fresh.

How Long Do Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Last

An unopened can of Chipotle in adobo can last for up to 2 years. Once you open it, transfer the remaining chipotles and adobo sauce to a tightly sealed glass jar and store in the fridge. It can last for 6 months to a year. So, next time you reach for that can of Chipotle in adobo, rest assured that you’ll have plenty of time and opportunities to use it up before it goes bad.

  2. I made this yesterday and left out the hot sauce as it sounded too hot for me. It was perfect, definitely keeping this recipe. I like the spice, but not overly spicy. I may have added extra garlic, but it was perfect.

    1. Yummy! So glad you liked it too. It’s my favorite go-to for many meats and sandwiches. I love to add extra garlic too. However, experiment to your liking until you perfect the sauce to your taste

  3. Hi In Canada super markets dont have Chipotal Adobe Sauce. can you please tell what is the substitute. . thanks.

    1. If you can’t find chipotle in adobo sauce, you can substitute it with a mix of smoked paprika, tomato paste, and a bit of cayenne or hot sauce for heat. Another option is to use chipotle powder or dried chipotle peppers blended with a little vinegar and tomato sauce to mimic the smoky, tangy flavor. Hope that helps!
