Air Fryer Cabbage is a new simple and delicious way to add some low-calorie crunchy goodness to your meals. The air fryer creates a crispy texture on the cabbage while being tender inside; and preserving its natural flavors and nutrients. I love how it turns out with crispy roasted edges and gorgeous caramelized peaks.
1small head green cabbageSliced into wedges or slices, approximately ½ inch thick to ¾ inch thick.
2Tablespoonsolive oil or avocado oil.
1/2teaspoonSalt and pepper to taste
1teaspoonseasoning veggie blendI used Vegeta All-purpose seasoning
1teaspoonfresh parsleyfinely chopped, for garnish, optional)
2Tablespoonschopped cooked bacon or bacon crumblesoptional
Instructions
Remove any wilted or damaged outer leaves. Cut off the stem and slice the cabbage into two wedges or slices, approximately ½ inch thick to ¾ inch thick. But no more than 1 inch thick. Make sure that the pieces are roughly equal in size to ensure even cooking.
Season: You can use whatever seasoning blend you prefer, but a simple mixture of olive oil, salt, and pepper is always a winner. If you like a little heat, add some cayenne pepper or chili flakes. You can also toss in some minced garlic, onion powder, or smoked paprika for added flavor.
Cook: Set your air fryer to 375°F and preheat it for 3 minutes. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray, then arrange the cabbage pieces in a single layer, making sure they're not too close together. Depending on the size and thickness of the cabbage pieces, you'll need to cook for about 10-13 minutes, flipping halfway through. The cabbage should be browned and crispy on the edges.
Notes
Why My Cabbage's Outer Leaves are Burnt?
This is normal. The heat from the air fryer’s fan dries out the outer layers of the cabbage, which results in burnt edges. The same thing can happen when preparing other vegetables in an air fryer, so it’s not just limited to cabbage steaks. The good news, you can still enjoy the cabbage steak without the burned outer layer. Simply remove or cut the burned edge with the scissors. It’s that easy! (see blog post for pictures and details)
Toppings
Adding toppings to roasted cabbage steak is a great way to enhance its flavor.
Sprinkle it with your choice of crispy bacon, feta, or crumbled Blue cheese, crunchy breadcrumbs, and sweet caramelized onions.
For a spicy kick, add red pepper flakes or a dash of cayenne pepper.
I love adding cranberries and walnuts for a sweet and nutty flavor.
For a tangy-sweet glaze, drizzle the cabbage steaks with balsamic vinegar and honey. You can make this homemade Balsamic glaze (reduction) and store it in the fridge to drizzle on many veggies and meats.
